He's not wearing his typical waistcoat because this depiction is from the climactic scene where he is acting as the "Royal Herald" for the Queen of Hearts, so he's dressed in a page's court-wear instead: a long-sleeved red jacket and over it, a white tunic vest with a large red heart in the center, lavender pants, and a sky blue, starched "ruff" collar with figure eight pleats, as was popular in the 16th-17th century. He carries a rolled-up scroll in his right hand and wears a pair of "pince-nez" glasses (without earpieces), in order to read it. The metallic-gold trumpet in his left hand is to announce the proceedings and call witnesses for the trial of the Knave of Hearts, who is accused of stealing tarts. The ornament can stand on it's own, or be hung from the top, and is dated on the underside.
