This 2026 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament features "The Creature from the Black Lagoon," a monster from the 1954 film of the same name . He is also known as the "Gill-man," a half-human, half-amphibian creature that lives in the Amazon River. He has green, scaly skin, webbed hands and feet, and gills that help him breathe underwater. This ornament shows him in the classic pose, coming out of the water in an aggressive stance, with arms raised to defend...or attack? Scientists discovered him while exploring the river but the Creature becomes frightened and defensive when people enter his home to study him. One of the scientists, Kay, catches his attention, and he becomes curious about her. The story shows how the Creature is not purely evil but more like a wild animal trying to survive in a world that doesn’t understand him. He is often seen as both scary and sad because he is alone and treated as a monster instead of a living being. The character of the Creature from the Black Lagoon was portrayed by two different actors: Ricou Browning, the stuntman who performed swimming sequences, and Ben Chapman, who wore the bulkier suit to play the monster for the land scenes. The Director, Jack Arnold, insisted that no air bubbles could ever be seen on screen, which forced Ricou to hold his breath up to 4 minutes at a time, while performing difficult, underwater swimming sequences. Fun Facts: The creature's concept was originally designed by Milicent Patrick, one of the few women employed by Hollywood's makeup industry. The head of the makeup department, Bud Westmore, removed her name from the movie credits, claiming the glory for himself, out of jealousy. After filming of the movie ended, as with so many original costumes, at the time, this monster's costumes were saved by a janitor at the studio, who found the pieces in the trash. He took them home as a Halloween costume for his son, but the surviving pieces were tracked-down by sci-fi writer Forrest J. Ackerman and rescued, again. Steven Spielberg has cited the suspenseful sequences shot in the lagoon as direct inspiration for his opening scenes in his 1975 eco-horror, creature-feature, "Jaws."
