1985 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament
QX2662
This 1985 Hallmark Keepsake Christmas Ornament is a frosted white glass ball with metal cap and clear plastic sleeve featuring famous Normal Rockwell scenes with Santa. The caption reads: "...He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself.... C.C. Moore | FROM THE NORMAN ROCKWELL COLLECTION | 1985," followed by the copyright at the bottom. The first illustration is "Santa and His Helpers" and depicts a sleeping Santa with a halo above his head and elves around him, helping him make toys. The second, entitled "Santa's Visitors," shows Santa reading a book titled "Good Boys & Girls" to two children. In the last scene, the well-known illustration frequently referred to as "Filling the Stocking" or "He Was Chubby and Plump, " has Santa inside a home, standing in front of the fireplace hearth with his overflowing sack of toys, holding a tiny child's stocking in his hands and laughing heartily. The illustrations exude Rockwell's warm humor and capture the magic of the Christmas season. The ornament is packaged in the original "window" box, viewable from all sides, so you can see the entire bulb.
Norman Percevel Rockwell (1894–1978), the American painter and illustrator, is most famous for the decades of magazine covers he created for The Saturday Evening Post, showing a sentimental and now, nostalgic, view of American life. Also notable is his long-lasting relationship with the Boy Scouts of America's publication "Boys' Life" (now known as "Scout Life"). A prolific artist, he produced over 4,000 original works in his lifetime, most of which are now in public collections.
Diana McGehee, the Former Hallmark Senior Production Artist, started as an intern, then was hired in 1977, in the book department. In 1983, she was asked to join the new Keepsake studio, where she created 29 ornaments, including interpretations of famous paintings/illustrations and North Pole storytelling.
