1984 Old World Cuckoo Clock
1984 Hallmark early 90's, and is best known for creating the beloved Keepsake Ornament
QX4551
This 1984 Hallmark Keepsake Christmas Ornament features a Santa-themed German Black Forest cuckoo clock or Schwarzwälder Kuckucksuhren, named for the southwestern region of Germany from which they originated. It's carved in the traditional style, versus the chalet or modern types, and has deep carving stained in a dark walnut shade with dark hunter green and red accents. An "Old World" Santa sits on top of the slanted roof, bordered by large oak leaves, and the top of his red hat matches the roof color. The clock hands move manually and the brass plate on the clock face is engraved with "MERRY CHRISTMAS." A running deer is at the bottom on a hanging banner, bordered in red, and surrounded by more oak leaves. Two pinecones hang from the bottom, attached to a gold chain, representing the gravity-powered weights that would run the internal gears and cuckoo mechanism, keeping time, as they slowly unwind the sprockets inside, via a pulley system, hidden behind the door in the back. The dated copyright is on the underside of the base and the ornament is packaged in the original full color box.
Donna Lee, the artist, worked for Hallmark from 1958 until she retired in the early 90's, and is best known for creating the beloved Keepsake series, "Nostalgic Houses and Shops," and the unofficial, "Donna Lee Angels."
