1984 Madonna and Child and St. John, Art Masterpiece #1

1984 Hallmark Art Masterpiece Ornament

QX3494

First in the Art Masterpiece Hallmark Keepsake series.

This 1984 Hallmark Keepsake Christmas Ornament is a disc with gold metal rim, clear acrylic back, featuring a full color reproduction of Giuliano Bugiardini's painting of Mary, Jesus, and St. John, celebrating the bond between Christ and his cousin, the patron saint of Florence. The rich color palette, taken from traditional High Renaissance symbolism, depicts the intimate meeting with Mary's crimson red dress alluding to Christ's bloodshed during the crucifixion, blue representing her role as the Queen of Heaven, and the green spring landscape as rebirth and the Resurrection. The image is printed on satin fabric and is padded, like an upholstered chair's seat, and the back has metallic-gold text on dusty rose satin, reading: "GIULIANO BUGIARDINI "Madonna and Child and St. John" (ca. 1505) THE NELSON-ATKINS MUSEUM OF ART - KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI (NELSON FUND). The copyright is dated at the bottom. The ornament is encased in a plastic shell, packaged in the original box, with full window on the front and a die cut on back, in the shape of a circle.

Diana McGehee, the Former Hallmark Senior Production Artist, started as an intern, then was hired in 1977, in the book department. In 1983, she was asked to join the new Keepsake studio, where she created 29 ornaments, including interpretations of famous paintings/illustrations and North Pole storytelling.
