Frosty Friends
1983 Scrimshaw Reindeer
1983 Hallmark Frosty Friends Ornament
QX4249
This 1983 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament features an ivory colored deer with the look of scrimshaw, the maritime folk art of "scrimshanders," usually sailors and whalemen who carved designs into whale bones and teeth or walrus tusks, while on long voyages. The brown antlers are metal and match the tribal-looking etchings engraved on both sides. The deer is in the courant, or "at speed" position, with all four legs in med-air. The ornament is dated in the copyright on the underside of the belly. It's encased in a plastic tray, molded for protection, and packaged in the original box with a full color sleeve.
Fun Fact: A deer will perform a "pronking" or "stotting" action, to signal predators to not waste their time, by springing high into the air, simultaneously lifting all four of it's feet of the ground and showing that it is agile, fit, and ready to fight or flee.
Ed Seale is from Ontario, Canada, and worked for Hallmark from 1968-1999. He's best known for being one of the founding artists in the Frosty Friends series, the longest-running Hallmark Keepsake series. "The warmth of fun and friendship in an icy, cold place. We lived on a farm in Canada — and the pond was the biggest source of entertainment."
