This 1982 Hallmark Keepsake Christmas Ornament features Santa Claus flying a silver biplane named, "THE SPIRIT of CHRISTMAS." He's waving from the "open-air" cockpit, with his hat and beard blowing in the wind. The plane's name is painted across the top of the top wing, in red, and the ailerons (hinges that control roll), are striped orange and green. Both the upper and lower wings are bordered in orange, and the propeller, which spins, is red, with green quarter-turn fasteners on the nose. The ornament is dated "1982," in red on both sides of the vertical fin, at the rear, and the tailwheel moves, as do the two primary wheels, at the front. The ornament can stand on it's own or be hung from the top and is dated in the copyright on the bottom of the undercarriage. It's packaged in the original box, with clear plastic lid and green flocked velvet tray, molded for protection.
Fun Fact: Biplanes had weak engines and required a large wing surface in order to generate enough lift to leave the ground, so stacking two wings provided the strength needed, since longer, single wings easily snapped. Depending on the specific model, the ailerons could be on one or both wings.
Linda Sickman, one of the original Hallmark Keepsake Ornament artists, started working for Hallmark in 1963 and joined the Keepsake division in 1975. She's best known for her work with pressed tin, folk art, and the series, "Rocking Horse Memories," which ran from 1981-1996. Her most sought-after pieces include the Winter Angel and Americana-style Santa and Mrs. Claus figures.
