Hallmark Keepsake Ornament

1981 Shepherd Scene

1981 1981 > Religious Ornaments

QX5002

This Hallmark Keepsake Christmas Ornament is part of the Holiday Highlights Collection and features a transparent, acrylic arch-shape with beveled edge, and a sunken relief of a shepherd holding a lamb with two sheep at his feet. Standing on a hilltop facing the city, they're all mesmerized by the bright light of the Star of Bethlehem, which is inlaid with metallic-silver, along with the caption at the bottom: "CHRISTMAS 1981." This intaglio technique is opposite that of a cameo, which has a raised, outward-protruding design, so when it's viewed from the front, you look through the smooth, clear material and see a detailed, three-dimensional image floating inside. The ornament is packaged in a clear plastic tray, molded for protection, and the original box has an open window front with die-cut back, so you can see both sides.

Fun Fact: Intaglio sunken relief art was widely used for signet rings and wax seals, as the sunken carving makes a raised, positive impression.
