1978 Jolly Holly-Daying, Spencer Sparrow

The 1978 Hallmark Christmas Ornament is part of the Tree-Trimmer Collection and features Spencer Sparrow on a cream-colored, unbreakable satin ball with transparent plastic sleeve. The protective sleeve has two rectangular panels with red borders, each showing Spencer, a sweet little field sparrow, in a different, delightful scene. On the dated side, the sentiment reads, "Holly days are jolly days," and "CHRISTMAS 1978," in black, with him in-between, sitting inside a holly wreath with red berries and a big red bow on top. He's dressed in a grey hat with brown hatband, red scarf, and grey shoes, and wearing an adorable smile. On the other side, he's pulling a sled full of green and red presents, with snowflakes falling all around him, and he's bundled up, ready to deliver holiday happiness to your home! The copyright is printed below his shoe, on the edge of the sleeve, and the ornament is packaged in the original "window" box, with tag and gift card.

Fun Fact: March 20 is World Sparrow Day, when we can celebrate these fine, feathered friends! Field Sparrows change the location of their nest, depending on the season. In early spring, they build on the ground, when snakes and other predators are less active, then in summer, they build high in trees and shrubs, in order to maintain safety. The male's song is also unique -- instead of a traditional chirp, the sound is similar to a ping-pong ball that was dropped on a table and is bounces faster, until it stops. These tiny birds can have up to 5 broods of babies per season and the males cares for them while Mama goes off to rebuild a nest for the next batch. When threatened, adults will flutter helplessly on the ground, faking a broken wing to lure predators away.
