1977 Della Robia Wreath Praying Child, Twirl-About

1977 Hallmark early 90's, and is best known for creating the beloved Keepsake Ornament

QX1935

This 1977 Hallmark Twirl-About Christmas Ornament is part of the Tree-Trimmer Collection and features a child praying inside the middle of a fruit covered wreath with a white bow and dated banner. The brown-haired child is wearing a sage green nightgown and can spin around inside of the wreath, which is filled with apples, grapes and other fruits, in a Della Robia style. Inspired by Italian Renaissance art, which used glazed terracotta to frame religious plaques with realistic swags of fruit, this style became a staple of historic Colonial Williamsburg harvest and Christmas wreaths, with oranges, apples, and pomegranates, nestled among fresh evergreens, seed pods, and pine cones.

Donna Lee, the artist, worked for Hallmark from 1958 until she retired in the early 90's, and is best known for creating the beloved Keepsake series, "Nostalgic Houses and Shops," and "Donna Lee Angels."
