Hallmark Keepsake Ornament

1976 Soldier, Twirl-About

1976 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament

QX1731

This 1976 Hallmark "Twirl-Abouts" Ornament is part of the Tree-Trimmer Collection, and features a toy soldier standing at attention, in the doorway of a guardhouse. The ornament is made to look as though it was carved from wood and is dated "1976" in red, at the bottom of the door, in between two small evergreen trees. He's in his dress uniform, wearing white gloves, blue pants, a red/white jacket with orange cuffs on the sleeves and orange epaulettes on the shoulders. The tall, black cylindrical shako hat has an orange band and plume (feather), and a black chin strap. Able to spin on the metal pin, he "twirls about," at his station--what else is there to do when you can't leave your post?!

Linda Sickman, one of the original Hallmark Keepsake Ornament artists, started working for Hallmark in 1963 and joined the Keepsake division in 1975. She's best known for her work with pressed tin, folk art, and the series, "Rocking Horse Memories," which ran from 1981-1996. Her most sought-after pieces include the Winter Angel and Americana-style Santa and Mrs. Claus figures.
