Hallmark Keepsake Ornament
1976 Lollipops, Marty Links
1976 Hallmark Keepsake Ornament
QX2071
This Hallmark Christmas Ornament set has two mini frosted glass balls with silver caps, and is part of the Tree-Trimmer Collection. It features "Lollipops" characters in dated cartoon scenes, printed on a translucent plastic sleeve, with the artist's name.
One shows a 'lil cutie, dressed in a red coat and hat, trying to feed her lunch to a tiny bluebird, on the ground. Her brown paper bag sits next to her in the snow, under an evergreen, decorated for Christmas with garland and multicolored bulbs. Three other bluebirds fly around her and the tree, waiting to see if he takes the bait! The artist's signature is under the lunch bag. The opposite side has a red, glass bulb ornament with blue and gold border, gold cap, and red ribbon bow on top. Bluebirds hold the ends of the ribbon and the message on the ornament is "Merry Christmas 1976," in black. The year and copyright is printed below the bag, near the edge of the plastic wrap.
The other depicts a young girl telling a tiny grey mouse to be quiet. She's dressed in a red shirt and is standing in front of a brick fireplace with a stocking hanging on the mantle. The mantle is decorated with holly garland and two, red candles, burning brightly. Her head is bent and her index finger is over her lips in a "Shhh" motion, presumably to keep the 'lil mousie from giving her peeking away! The reverse side shows another grey mouse looking up at a thin wreath, made of holly leaves and berries, with a red ribbon bow at the top. In the middle of the wreath is the caption, "Noel 1976," in black. The year and copyright is printed below, near the edge of the plastic wrap.
Martha Arguello, aka Marty Links, was a American cartoonist, who's comic strips ran in various newspapers until 1979, when she decided to design cards for Hallmark, where she worked as an artist, until age 82.
Disclaimer: As with many older glass ball ornaments, it may have developed "age spots," which is normal with older ornaments.
