2026 Cowardly Lion, The Wizard of Oz

features, "The Cowardly Lion," from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's 1939 movie, "The Wizard of Oz," based on the 1900 novel, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," by L. Frank Baum. The Cowardly Lion is shown wearing a red bow in his mane, after the group gets makeovers in the Emerald City, right before they go to meet the Wizard. As part of his "beauty treatment," he's also given a "permanent," to curl his mane and upon exiting the salon, he proudly explains to the guard that he got his hair fixed up especially for the occasion. His role in the movie is integral, as he represents the universal human struggle to overcome fear and his character is a metaphor for the inherent inner strength we already possess. The bravery he demonstrates throughout their journey enables him, and the group, to realize that he just needed to recognize his own resilience and believe in himself. Bert Lahr, the actor who played the Cowardly Lion, had difficulty with the costume, which was made from real lion pelts, weighed over 90 pounds, and was not ventilated. Lahr had to drink through a straw to stay hydrated and was forced to "rest" while leaning upright on a board. Luckily, this commemorative ornament honoring the character and what it represents, doesn't weigh that much and won't collapse your tree! Fun Fact: This iconic suit was nearly thrown away decades after the film was made but was rescued, restored, and sold for millions at auction!
