1978 Antique Toys, Carousel #1

This 1978 Hallmark Christmas Ornament is first in the "Antique Toys" series.

The hand-painted ornament is part of the Tree-Trimmer Collection and features a red and green carousel with yellow and blue accents on the canopy. It has two "carriages" to ride in: a yellow, red, and green vintage-style Roadster car, and an orange and yellow rocking horse, on a green base. The red and green sleigh with blue blades is full of yellow, blue, and green Christmas presents, so there's no room for a passenger! The top is dated with "CHRISTMAS 1978" repeated twice in a circle, debossed in yellow, against a green background with a blue, scalloped border at the bottom and yellow with red polka dots at the top. The base has a knob to manually spin the carousel and is embossed with the copyright underneath. It's packaged in the original metallic-gold box, with clear plastic lid, black flocked velvet plastic tray, and the original metallic-gold tag.

Kathy Killip, an accomplished American commercial artist, worked as a design supervisor for Hallmark from 1965-1974, and her artwork was featured in 1973, the first year of their ornament line. Her signature style is traditional nature themes and American folk art, and her ornaments are highly sought-after vintage items on collector sites.
